About virvas:
Common virva is a rarely seen creature which inhabits old-growth conifer tree (especially spruce) forests in northern wildernesses. In the wild, virvas’ appearance doesn’t vary much between individuals: they all have brownish fur and, as the most characterizing feature, a mask covering their entire face. They are thought to live in loose packs consisting of independent individuals and more solid groups that remain in certain areas without any acknowledged hierarchy or distribution of tasks. The majority of virvas is relatively small at size but some massive ones have been seen during the encounters with the latter “main packs”.

Elusiveness of the species and general unwillingness to find out whether this aversion to humans is a good or bad thing has led to the fact that very little is known of these creatures – which in turn has brought about deep-rooted superstition. People who have even a minor chance to run into wild virvas usually regard them as some sort of forest spirits which are to be treated with respect. They are not emphasized, though. And when someone goes missing in the forest for good… well, if no one knows what or how those masked mischiefs eat, there could as well be humans on their menu, right? Still, killing a virva or removing its mask (or even trying any of the two for that matter) is strictly a taboo.

By observing the consequences of occasional contacts between virvas and civilization through centuries, it has become clear that even their mere way of existence is anything but simple. Young virvas seem to be extremely open to external stimuli, and when taken out of their natural habitat they usually go through a cluster of drastic changes considering not only their appearance but also everything from feeding habits to life expectancy. However, these different variations of virvas tend to fade as historical and cultural phenomena are brought to an end and new ones are born.
